Anger Management: Take Time to Collect Yourself

It’s easy to say or write something you later regret when in the heat of the moment. Before you speak (or email, or tweet, or text, etc.), take time to collect yourself and think through how you are feeling. Here are some tips on how:

  1. If you have a history of losing your cool in these situations, commit yourself to changing.
  2. When angry, find opportunities to stop yourself. You may not remember your commitment right away, but when you do, take the opportunity to break.
  3. Walk away from the situation, take a deep breath, regroup and think about what you want and what is important to you (winning the argument, your relationship with the person, something else).
  4. Repeat as necessary.
